Thankas Stories of the Buddha's Life

This Tibetan style Thanka / Thangka features tales from the Buddha's life, covering what are known as auspicious moments. The large middle image depicts the moment of enlightenment, where the Lord Buddha calls the Earth Goddess to witness His freedom from desire and His dedication to share the path to enlightenment with all of mankind.

The other images include such scenes as the Buddha entering Nirvana, and the first sermon where He taught the Dharma to His disciples. Mahayana Buddhists refer to this Buddha as the Shakyamuni Buddha (also spelled as Sakyamuni).

In particular, the brocade of this Thanka / Thangka is extremely intricate and shows off the quality of work Nepali artists are capable of producing.

Thanka Buddhist Stories Detail
This is a detail of the image in the middle of the Thanka, depicting the Buddha Calling the Earth to Witness.

Thanka Entering Nirvana
This scene (found in the bottom middle of the Thanka) depicts the moment of the Buddha entering Nirvana. Among the witnesses are the monks who were his disciples, as well as several deities.
Thanka Reaching Enlightenment

This scene depicts the Buddha in meditation under the Bodhi tree. While nearing enlightenment, Mara attempted to distract the Buddha by surrounding him with temptations.
