These statues are available in three different postures (known as attitudes), and each posture has a different meaning. The first statue shows the Buddha in the the posture of Meditation, also known as the Meditation Buddha (this is the large photo above). The hands are folded in the lap, and this is often called the Amitabha Buddha. The word "Amtiabha" means Boundless Light or Incomprehensible, denoting that which cannont be contained or understood. According to Tibetan tradition, This particular Buddha image is one of the five Dhyani (or Pancha) Buddhas, which guard the five directions (north, east south, west, and center). This particular image is guardian of the west. The Dhyani Buddhas are not seperate deities, but are just different aspects of the Buddha.
The hands folded in the lap are the Mudra (hand gesture) of Samadhi. The five Dhyani Buddhas are so popular in Nepal that they are found in every stupa, thousands of Chaityas (small stupas), in courtyards, and painted in the main entrance to Buddhist homes.

 The Medicine Buddha holds a blooming myrobalan plant in his left hand, and his right hand is in the mudra (or gesture) of bestowing a gift. Tibetan Buddhists believe that the knowledge of the myrobalan plant was a gift from the Buddha, as it can help heal physical and mental diseases. They liken its ability to heal and protect to that of the Dharma.
Conversely, it is believed that the Dharma is like medicine for the ailing soul, as it leads to a cure from suffering in this worldly existence. The right hand is in the mudra (hand gesture) of bewtowing a gift or granting a boon. The left hand is in the gesture of meditation, and is usually seen holding a bowl (as in this statue).

 Shakyamuni Buddha Statue: This is a rupa, or statue, of the Lord Buddha in the posture of Calling the Earth to Witness, which is considered by Buddhists as the moment of enlightenment. This Buddha Images represents the zenith of Buddhism for many Theravada Buddhists, and is the most common attitude found in Southeast Asia. Known as Shakyamuni, this is the historical Buddha. The face of this statue is smooth with gold paint giving it a unique, matte appearance, and allowing for extra detail.
Born Prince Siddhartha approximately 530 BCE, his life focused on understanding the path to salvation in a world of constant suffering. Prince Siddhartha was given the name Buddha, which means "enlightened one," by his followers. The word Shakyamuni means "lion of the Shakya clan" as that was his family's name.
While Prince Siddhartha was meditating under the Boddhi tree attempting to attaing enlightenment, Mara was trying to detour from reaching enlightenment by tempting Him. He reached down to the ground to have the Mother Earth Goddess witness his purity and desire to share the method of enlightenment with all of humanity. Hence, the hand gesture of touching the ground like this is known as "Calling the Earth to Witness."
