This Ganesha statue is 18 inches tall, and will impress you with both its size and detail. Ganesha is known as the "God of Success and Remover of Obstacles" and he is believed to help lead to successful beginnings. Many people will say a small prayer to Ganesha to help ensure success before doing the smallest tasks (such as writing a letter to a friend or starting a car trip).

Many people often mistakenly believe that Ganesha is an elephant. On the contrary, Ganesha is actually a "human" god (meaning that his physical characteristics are similar to those of humans). However, Ganesha does indeed have an elephant's head. There are several explanations of how Ganesha came to have an elephant's head. One has it that Ganesha's mother, Parvati, was taking a bath when her husband, Shiva, was away from home. Parvati made Ganesha out of clay and had him guard the door to her bath. While enjoying her bath, Parvati's husband Shiva came home and not ever having met Ganesha, promptly cut off his head so that he could enter his wife's bath.

Parvati became so saddened that her son's head had been cut off that Shiva promised her he would replace Ganesha's head with the head of the first creature that Parvati saw. Since the first creature she saw was an elephant, Ganesha was given the head of an elephant.
