On Sale Now! (Normally $59) Seated Buddha statue from Thaialnd. This is a cast bronze rupa or statue of a seated Buddha, and it is quite unusual. Mostly, it is quite uncommon to see images of the Buddha sitting Western style (as on a throne). The right hand displays the Varada Mudra (or Gift-Bestowing hand gesture), and the feet rest upon a double-lotus blossom.
This statue represents a period after the Buddha had been teaching the Dharma for several years. An argument broke out amongst two groups of his disciples. Realizing he could not settle their arguments, the Buddha left his disciples and retreated to the forest.
While making his way to the forest, an elephant saw the Buddha and cleared out a path to a hidden cave. After the Buddha took residence in this cave, the elephant brought offerings to the Buddha every day. One day a monkey saw the elephant making offerings to the Buddha. Suddenly, the monkey realized who this was, and promptly brought his most valuable possession to offer the Buddha; a honeycomb.
Eventually, the quarreling monks realized their foolishness, and they finally went to seek forgiveness from the Buddha, and from one another. (Another style of the Buddha in a Western Seated Position is the Maitreya Buddha).
