Now On Sale! Meditation Buddha Statues: This is a rupa, or statue, of the Lord Buddha in the posture of Meditation, also known as the Amitabha Buddha. These particular Buddha Images are made out of Bone Resin, a unique mixture of half regular resin and half buffalo bone.
In Mahayana Buddhism of Tibet and Nepal, this is one of the five Dhyani (or Transcendental) Buddhas, which guard the five directions (north, east south, west, and center). This particular image is guardian of the west. The Dhyani Buddhas are not seperate deities, but are just different aspects of the Buddha.
The word Amitabha translates as "Boundless Light," or "Incomprehensible." The hands folded in the lap are the Mudra (hand gesture) of Samadhi. The five Dhyani Buddhas are so popular in Nepal that they are found in every stupa, thousands of Chaityas (small stupas), in courtyards, and painted in the main entrance to Buddhist homes.
