Now On Sale! Buddha Head Statues (known as "Sien" in Thai), these are bronze statues of the Buddha's head, which is highly revered in Buddhist countries. In fact, in Thailand they use a different word for the head of Monks and the Buddha then for laymen.
The head is considered sacred throughout much of the Buddhist and Hindu world, since it is believed that the spirit resides in the head of a person. We are always careful in Thailand never to accidentally bump someone on the head. On the other hand, the feet are generally considered unclean, so one should avoid placing a Buddha statue toward the end of a bed, where someone's feet might point at the statue.
This particular image is based on the Chiang Saen period of Thai art. Chiang Saen is located in the north of Thailand, in Chiang Rai province.
