The Jewel In the Lotus is a sacred prayer (also called a mantra) that is common in Tibetan Buddhism, and also in Nepal as well, which has a similar Buddhist spirituality with Tibet. This mantra is usually pronounced "Om Mani Padmi Hum" and is a reference to the Dharma, or sacred teachings of the Buddha. They consider these teachings to be as pure as a Jewel in a Lotus Blossom (a symbol for absolute purity).
This mantra is seen throughout Tibet and Nepal inscribed on rocks, caves,prayer flags, prayer wheels and other places where the wind may carry the spirit of these prayers along. This mantra is associated with Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion an the protector of Tibet. It is believed that he is incarnated in the lineage of the Dalai Lamas.
This pendant measures 1.25 inches in diametre (a little bigger than the size of a quarter). It is made of bone resin, a unique resin made from the bones of deceased buffalo.
