Shiva is the destroyer - destroyer of ignorance, desire, ego, and death. Worldly matters do not interest Shiva, as he strives to be pure of mind and heart. He does not adorn his body with jewels or flowers. He does not mind the company of ghosts. Sometimes he wanders into crematoriums, smears his body with ash and dances in the light of the funeral pyres, reminding all about the transitory nature of material things.

Many worship him as the God of Asceticism, the practice of self-denial and renunciation of worldly pleasure in order to attain a higher degree of spirituality and enlightenment, and the patron saint of yoga practitioners. As such, Shiva is often seen with his eyes half-closed, as if in meditation. As the destroyer, he can often be depicted wearing a necklace of skulls and surrounded by demons. As the creative force, the lingam (a phallic emblem) symbolizes his reproductive, or creative, aspect.

There are many symbols associated with Shiva / Siva that are found in these cards. Shiva is always seen with snakes, which are associated with creation from destruction (since they shed their old skins and emerge with new ones). The trident's three points symbolize the creation, protection and destruction of the universe.
