Shakyamuni Buddha Tibetan Buddhist Greeting Cards : These colorful greeting cards feature images from Tibetan Buddhism, in particular the major deities found in Mahayana Buddhism in Tibet and Nepal. Each card explains the meaning of the deity depicted on the card, but the inside is blank so you can compose the perfect note to a loved one or friend.

Shakyamuni Buddha is considered to be the Buddha of our age, and is often referred to as the historical Buddha. He makes the hand gesture of teaching (literally, turning the wheel of Dharma). This posture is associated with the frist sermon g iven by the Buddha after attaining enlightenment.

The historical Buddha lived from 563 BCE to 483 BCE, and was born a prince into a powerful family. However the prince gave up his wealth and family to find a way for mankind to escape suffering. He entered the forest and started practicing austerities.

He attained "bodhi" (awakening) after six years of fasting and meditation, from which the name Buddha is derived. The first sermon taught the middle way between ascetic and indulgent lifestyles. The Buddha is venerated for giving mankind a path for overcoming sfering in the material world.
