The word Om is considered the Sacred Symbol of the Universe in Hinduism. When the universe was still empty, thre was only the sound of Om, and from this cosmic vibration the entire universe unfolded.
Actually, it is more correct phonetically (and has more meaning) if the word is spelled out as "Aum" instead, since in the original Sanskrit it is spelled with three letters as well. And significantly, each of these three letters represents a different cosmic deity; the "A" represents the creation of the universe, overseen by Lord Brahma - The "U" represents The sustainging of the universe, overseen by Lord Vishnu - and the "M" represents the Destruction / Rebrith of the Universe, overseen by Lord Shiva.
