These Peace Sign pendants are just about 1.5 Inches Tall by 1.5 Inches across, and they are made to look like they come from Mother of Pearl shell inlay.

The history of the Peace Sign is very interesting. It was originally created as a symbol against Nuclear Weapons and Nuclear Power (and in Britain, where it was originally designed, it is still associated with this movement). It was meant to look like a slash through a D, meaning "No (Nuclear) Destruction."

The first time it was realy displayed in publick was back in 1958, during a march against Nuclear Weapon manufacturing in England, when a group of protestors distributed 500 of the signs on sticks to be waved.

Now as it turned out, one attendee at this march was Mr. Bayard Rustin - a close friend of the Reverand Martin Luther King, JR. He was so impressed by the symbol that he incorporated it into Civil Rights marches in the US. Later on, during the build up of the Vietnam War, anti-war protestors started to incorporate the symbol in their marches. Even soldiers in the US armed forces would paint this symbol onto their helmets while fighting in the jungles of Southeast Asia.

Throughout the world today, aside from in Britain, it is generally considered an anti-war symbol. It has shown up in former Soviet Bloc countries when they demonstrated, and also appeared in the former Yugoslavia as that country descended into civil war during the 1990s.

It is made from bone resin, a special resin made from the bones of deceased water buffalo.
