The Peace Sign is one of the most widely recognized symbols throughout the world. Whether in Asia, the Americas, Europe, or Australia, the peace sign is nearly universally recognized.
The Peace symbol as we know it today was originally designed for the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War, a movement in England that was for nuclear disarmament. Members of the committee would organize protests and marches against military bases where the committee suspected nuclear weapons were being stored.
But during the 1960's the sign became a symbol for the Anti-War movement in the US and other countries, and is now almost always just called The Peace Sign.
Historically there have been other symbols representing peace, notably the Dove with Olive Branch, and the V Sign made with the index and middle fingers. This sign is actually sign language for the word 'Love,' but during the 70's it was common for counterculture movements to flash the Love sign while saying the word 'Peace' when greeting others, so people began to use it as a peace sign as well.
