Durga Statues: Rupas of the Invincible Hindu Goddess
Our statues are made in India, Nepal and Thailand, and are appropriate for any Durga altar or any area where you would normally keep a religious statue. Materials Used in these Durga StatuesThese rupas (the traditional word for statues) are made from a combination of Brass, Bronze, and Copper. These metals are all quite similar to one another, and are somewhat soft, so they are very appropriate for use in statues. Plus, they are easy to care for, and they hold their patinas (applied cosmetic finishes) quite well.Scroll down to the bottom of this page for more information about Maha Durga. According to legend, both heaven and earth had been terrorized by the demon Mahishasur, who "could be killed neither by man nor by beast." Hence, a female deity was needed to overcome the demon. The gods got together and prayed to the great Mother Goddess, Devi, for deliverance. Out of her compassion, Durga was created, and she took the weapons of other gods as her own, including the Trident from Shiva, the Chakra (discus) from Vishnu, and various swords and arrows. Durga, like other Hindu Gods and goddesses, has a vehicle, also known as a mount, which is an animal or being upon which she travels. Durga's vehicle is 'Dawon,' which can be depicted as either a Lion, or as a Tiger. She is often shown with several pairs of arms, but she can also be depicted as having just one pair of arms as well.
