Recently CNN had an article on the increasingly popular Volunteer Vacations. These are travelers who are not satisfied with just sightseeing in some exotic locals. Instead, these "tourists" have decided to lend a hand.
The article mentioned the Earthwatch Institue, a nonprofit organization that helps hook up volunteers with field research on scientific projects. Another organization mentioned was Global Volunteers, which has helped people volunteer as teachers and work in conservation projects in Asia, Africa and South America.
"This is sort of a safe way to arrive in a country alone and just kind of see what happens," notes Sally Byrne, 43, a lawyer from Boston. "In a way I come back more energized than if I go spend a few days at the beach ... and a lot of people on these trips say the same thing."
Costs for one- to three-week Global Volunteers projects range from $650 to $2,595. In 2004, the average price for a one-to-three week Earthwatch project was $1,850, with projects ranging in price from $800 to $3,500. Travel expenses to the group meeting point are not included for either organization. In many cases, costs are tax-deductible for U.S. taxpayers, but speaking with a tax adviser before you leave is recommended.
