As you know I am from Thailand and we try to present as much information about Buddhism and Hindusim, along with Thai culture, as we can, we often get requests from viewers askin us to help identify a Buddhist statue. We just recently had such a request, and we are asking all visitors to help us out, because we are not familiar with this statue and need your help identifying it.
The owner of this statue was only able to give us a little bt of information as folows:
"Was wondering if you could give me any information on this one, We are doing a research on it and dont know nothing about it, all we do know is its all brass, stands about 15 inches tall and weighs about 12 pounds, other then that we have no other info, culture, gender, time range ect...any help would be greatly appreciated.."
As for myself, I believe this is a Buddhist statue (not Hindu), since there are no weapons in the hands. It appears that a conch shell might be in the left hand, while the right hand is in a mudra that I am not familiar with.
I am going to guess that this is probably a statue from the Mahayana school of Buddhism (which wen't through India and Tibet into China and further onto Korea and Japan), and that it is either a Chinese or Japanese made piece (it could be tibetan though - this really isn't my area of expertise!) I don't know if it is Kuan Yin (Chinese Goddess of Compassion) or whether it is a statue of a different deity.
To any of our visitors out there, if you have any ideas, please do send them to us at info@siamese-dream.com
