An article in CNNN Online recently mentioned the increasing popularity of chair Yoga, when an ordinary chair replaces the floor mat normally used in yoga, amongst the senior population of the US. Since many senior citizens have lost flexibility and muscle strength, it has been easier for them to work from the chair, where less body support is needed.
Many classes around the country have modified traditional yoga poses so that they can be adapted to chair yoga routines. These new routines can benefit the 1.6 million Americans age 55 and over who participate in such activities as yoga, Tai Chi and meditation.
The article quotes some senior citizens who practice chair yoga as saying that it keeps them motivated, making them want to participate in other forms of exercise. Others noted that it helps out with people's balance, as they still need to be able to refrain from slipping off the chair during their practice.
The article quotes noted yoga instructor, Ms. Peggy Cappy as saying that the chair allows people to try more adventurous things since they know they are not going to be hurt. Ms. Cappy is creator of the highly popular Yoga for The Rest Of Us video series.
