Hello!
I am pleased to announce the launch of the third edition of my book
‘Ashtanga Yoga As It Is’. Before I give you further details on the book
please let me introduce myself.
My name is Matthew Sweeney. I began practicing Yoga as a teenager and was
introduced to Ashtanga Yoga in 1992. I made my first visit to Mysore India
in 1994 to practice under the guidance of Shri K. Pattabhi Jois and on my
third visit in 1996 I completed the Advanced A series.

Through a great deal of personal study, self-enquiry and general research I
have committed my understanding of the practice and its benefits into the
book ‘Ashtanga Yoga As It Is’. This book is a comprehensive guide to the
first four sequences of Ashtanga Yoga: Primary, Intermediate, Advanced A and
Advanced B as taught by Shri Krishna Pattabhi Jois.
To date this is the only book in print which details all of the first four
traditional sequences of Ashtanga Yoga. It also shows the movements and
breaths of each posture together with the traditional Sanskrit counting; it
is easy to read and beautifully presented in B&W photographs of all the
Asana and Vinyasa.
The third edition of Ashtanga Yoga As It Is contains an extensive range of
new material, providing many insights on breathing, Asana, Bandha and
Drishti. It offers practical information on Yoga philosophy including
details on the Chakra, Granthi, Nadi and the Yoga sutras of Patanjali.
This book is a one of a kind map to the traditional Vinyasa method. Printed
on black and white satin durable paper, the book is presented in an A4
(29x21cm) landscape format. It is spiral bound which makes it ideal for
placing beside the Yoga mat.
Ashtanga Yoga As It Is provides an exploration of both the physical and
psychological aspects of the practice. It sheds light on some of the
existing Yoga concepts and some relevant self development principles.
It is
my hope that this book will convey an approach to Yoga that is inclusive
rather than exclusive - Yoga is for everyone, it is a lifelong process with
amazing treasures to be discovered anew each day. When applied correctly,
Yoga will bring you into a state of self-acceptance and self-awareness. It
is my belief that the written material will be of benefit for practitioners
of any Yoga tradition as its core philosophy is universal – the practice of
Yoga is the practice of self-awareness.
