The Yin and yang Sign represents opposites (such as Dark and Light), but more specifically, opposites that compliment each other (such as Man and woman, or Heaven and Earth). What the two sides joined together represents is one unified whole entity that has two complimentary aspects.
Yin is the black side of the symbol, and it represents such aspects as shade, water, coolness, quiet and calm. The Yin side also corresponds to the Night. Yang, on the other hand, is the white side of the sign, and represents light, energy, excitement, heat, and not surprisingly, corresponds to the Day.
The Yin Yang symbol is crucial to traditional Chinese philosophy, and the Tao Te Ching makes extensive use of Yin Yang. Traditional Chinese philosophy was based on living harmoniously with nature, and since day changed to night, summer to winter, full moon to new moon. So they observed that Yin flows into Yang, and Yang flows into Yin.
